Age 29, he enrolled on 3 September 1861 and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant, Company B, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on 18 February 1862 in Philadelphia. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 6 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in his right arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Adjutant of the regiment on 23 November 1863 and mustered out with them on 26 November 1864.
