Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Richmond, VA as First Sergeant, Company I, First South Carolina Infantry on 20 July 1861. He was reduced to Private between February and August 1862, but appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 29 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on detached service by April of 1863 and through at least December 1864.
