He enlisted in Charleston as Private, Company K, First South Carolina Infantry on 25 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 19 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent on furlough in Charleston due to wounds through August 1863 and in a hospital in Richmond, VA in October 1863. He was still absent due to wounds in February 1864 then detailed on "light duty" in Richmond in April. He was there to at least the end of December 1864.
