A farmer on his mother's place in Sumter, SC, he enlisted and mustered as First Sergeant, Company G, Hampton Legion Infantry on 19 August 1861. He was elected First Lieutenant on 25 April 1862 at the reorganization.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 while leading his Company.
