Before Sharpsburg

Age 22, he mustered as 2nd Corporal, Company H, 56th Virginia Infantry on on 15 July 1861 at White Hall in Albemarle County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot and captured in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Camden Street Hospital in Baltimore by 20 September and paroled at DeCamp Hospital in New York Harbor on 15 December 1862. By 27 December he was in Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA and he returned to his Company on 4 April 1863. He was mortally wounded by bearing the colors at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and captured there. He was exchanged on 16 September 1863 at DeCamp Hospital, but died of wounds on 27 September 1863.
