Before Sharpsburg

On 13 April 1861, age 30, he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 8th South Carolina Infantry. He was discharged on 26 November 1861 for disability, but reenlisted, in Company M, on 6 September 1862 as a substitute for W.R. Atkinson.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the thigh and arm and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His leg was amputated but he died of his wounds in a field hospital on or near the battlefield on 2 October 1862.
