He enlisted as Private, Company I, 8th South Carolina Infantry on 5 May 1861 in Florence. He was appointed Corporal on 1 June 1861. He transferred to Company L about April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on Maryland Heights near Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862.

His son Alexander, Jr. was also in Company I/L, was wounded at Fredericksburg and Deep Bottom, VA, but probably survived the war.
