A 22 year old farmer in the York District, he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 12th South Carolina Infantry on 13 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the neck and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 5 November and furloughed home. He was detailed on recruiting duty at the recommendation of a medical board and was discharged on 2 October 1863.
