He was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was probably treated at a field hospital near the battlefield and was briefly at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 15 and 16 October 1862 before being transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, then on to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He returned to duty, date not given, and was surrendered with his Company at Appomattox, VA in 1865.
