Before Sharpsburg

A 23 year old clerk in Richland District, he enlisted as 5th Sergeant, Company D, 12th South Carolina Infantry in 1861. He was wounded in two places at Gaines' Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was again twice wounded, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned 3rd Lieutenant by mid-1864, and promoted successively to 2nd and First Lieutenant, dates not given. He was captured near the end of the war and held at Johnson's Island, OH into June 1865.

After the War

He was in business in Columbia, and was State Inspector of Lands for the British & American Loan Company.
