He enlisted as Private, Company I, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 9 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty in January 1863 and was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was detailed for duty at the Stuart Hospital in Richmond, VA in May 1864 and furloughed in July. He was ill in Jackson Hospital in Richmond from September to mid-December 1864, then probably assigned as a nurse there.
