He entered service as Captain, Company A, 103rd New York Infantry on 4 January 1862 and was promoted to Major on 4 April.

The remainder of the War:
By Fredericksburg in December he was Colonel of the Regiment. He was killed in the skirmish at Providence Church Road (part of the Suffolk Siege), Virginia, 3 May 1863.

There is large obelisk (memorial) that was erected by officers and soldiers who served under his command in the Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. His letter recommending promotions to fill command vacancies in the Regiment after Antietam is also online.
