He enlisted as Sergeant Major about 15 May 1861 and was appointed Captain of Company F, 7th Tennessee Infantry on 20 May.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was mortally wounded in action at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, and was captured. He died of wounds on 8 July.
