Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as Private, Company D (later C), 5th Alabama Infantry on 15 March 1861 in Pineville. He was absent, sick for much of the rest of 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and was promoted to 5th Sergeant by June 1864. He was captured on 2 April 1865 at Petersburg, VA and sent to Point Lookout, MD. He was released on 9 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
