He enlisted as 3rd Sergeant, Company L or M (later G), 6th Alabama Infantry on 2 June 1861 in Corinth, MS. He was promoted to First Sergeant and commissioned First Lieutenant, dates not given.

On the Campaign

He commanded his Company in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and was mortally wounded there.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 24 October 1862.
