Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 22 year old merchant in Selma, AL, he enlisted there as 2nd Sergeant, Company G, 44th Alabama Infantry on 18 April 1862. He was appointed First Sergeant on 12 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a hospital in Selma by 14 November and furloughed for 30 days for wounds. He was elected 3rd (Jr. 2nd) Lieutenant on 17 October and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 9 December 1862. He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and promoted to Captain the same day. He was captured at Deep Bottom, VA on 10 December 1864.

His service from the State of Alabama,1 as W.P. and Winns P. Becker. He's also seen as William P. Baker. He was listed as killed at Sharpsburg on a casualty list in the Montgomery Weekly Advertiser of 8 October 1862.
