Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as Private, Company D, 8th Alabama Infantry on 10 May 1861 in Selma. He was promoted to 4th Corporal by July 1861 and Sergeant on 30 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and was later cited for bravery there on a regimental Roll of Honor.

The rest of the War

He was elected 2nd Lieutenant in November 1862 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 May 1863. He was wounded on 3 June 1864 (probably at Cold Harbor, VA), furloughed home from Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond, VA in July, and discharged for disability on a Surgeon's Certificate of 5 February 1865.
