A 16 year old farm boy on his father's small place in the Marion District, he enlisted there as Private, Company E, 23rd South Carolina Infantry on 28 September 1861.

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 at age 17.

His father "S.A. Hairgrove" (Steven Ammons Hargrove, 1815-1874) applied for his son's final pay of $125 beginning in November 1862. It was paid in January 1864.
