Before Antietam

A 27 year old laborer, he enlisted as a Private in Battery M, 2nd US Artillery on 22 March 1854 at New Orleans, LA. He reenlisted on 4 February 1859 at Fort Leavenworth, KS as a Corporal.

On the Campaign

He was in action with the battery at Antietam on 17 September 1862. Lieutenant Hains later reported:

... and Lance Corporal Frain (who was wounded) all deserve special notice ...

The rest of the War

He reenlisted in December 1863 at Brandy Station, VA.

After the War

He was discharged at the end of his enlistment in December 1868 at the Presidio in San Fransisco, CA as a Sergeant. He enlisted in the battery for the fourth time, at age 46, on 5 December 1871 at Fort Stevens in Oregon, and was discharged as a Sergeant not quite two years later on 12 November 1873 at Fort Johnson, NY.
