Age 31, from Wilkes County, he enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant of Company B, First North Carolina Infantry on 16 May 1861 in Wake County. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 12 April 1862 and to Captain on 8 July.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the jaw in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was detailed as enrolling officer in North Carolina in August 1863 and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 24 February 1865.
