Age 23, from Wake County, he enlisted as Private, Company I, First North Carolina Infantry on 16 July 1861 in Wake County. He was wounded at Ellerson's Mill, VA on 26 June 1862.

He was wounded again, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864, was a prisoner at Point Lookout, then transferred to Elmira, NY on 6 August. He was released on 12 June 1865.
