Age 20, from Northampton County, he enlisted as Private, Company F, First North Carolina Infantry on 18 August 1861 at Camp Bee, VA.

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 June 1863 but was mortally wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July and captured at a hospital near the battlefield on 5 July. He died of wounds there, date not given.
