Age 34, from Guilford County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 1 June 1861 in Guilford County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the hip in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty on 9 December 1862 and was wounded again, at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He was back with his Company in June but was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware. He was transferred to Point Lookout on 18 October 1863 and sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 24 February 1865. He was not exchanged and was at Washington, DC as a deserter/refugee in May 1865.
