Before Sharpsburg

Age 22, from Guilford County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 30 January 1862 in Raleigh. He was wounded at Ellerson's Mill (Mechanicsville), VA on 26 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, by a gunshot in the ankle, at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and returned to his Company about 21 July. He was wounded for the fourth time at Payne's Farm (Mine Run), VA on 27 November 1863 and hospitalized in Charlottesville, VA for syphilis from February to June 1864. He was captured on Early's Raid in Rockville, MD on 12 (or 14) July 1864 and held in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC. He was transferred to Fort Delaware on 19 September and released after taking an oath of allegiance on 19 June 1865.
