Age 18, from Alamance County, he was conscripted as Private, Company E, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Raleigh.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware to October, then at Point Lookout, MD until exchanged in May 1864. He was captured again, at Fisher's Hill, VA on 22 September 1864 and exchanged at Camp Lee, VA near Richmond, VA by 23 February 1865. He was paroled at Greensboro, NC on 18 May 1865.
