Before Antietam

He came to America in the 1840s and enlisted at about age 18 (giving it as 21) on 15 November 1848 as Private, Company D, 2nd United States Infantry (as Adam W Krautinger), was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant, and reenlisted at Fort Yuma, AZ in 1853. He reenlisted again, in St. Louis in 1858 (as Adam W Krowtinger) and was regimental Sergeant Major by 29 October 1861 when he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 15 March 1862 and was regimental Adjutant from 16 December 1861 to 1 November 1863.

On the Campaign

He was complimented by Lieutenant Poland for helping manage the skirmish line near the Middle Bridge at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain of Company K on 11 April 1864 in place of Samuel A McKee, killed. He was honored by brevets to Captain (3 May 1863) for action at Chancellorsville, VA and to Major (2 July 1863) for Gettysburg, and ended the war with his Company at Fort Columbus, NY.

After the War

He continued as a Captain in the Regular Army and retired on 7 June 1879, then stationed at Ft. Howard near Grangeville, ID.

He was born Adam Wilhelm Krautinger and changed his name after 1858. He married Anna Jacobs (1841-1906) in September 1858 and they had a son, Alfred (1859-1939).
