Before Antietam

A 23 year old laborer, he enlisted in Syracuse, NY as Private, Company B, 2nd United States Infantry on 25 October 1851 and was discharged as a Sergeant at Ft. Lookout, Nebraska Territory on 25 October 1856. He enlisted again, on 2 June 1859, in Company F of the 2nd Infantry at Ft. Ridgely, MN. He was First Sergeant of his Company by 1862.

On the Campaign

He was noted by Lieutenant Poland among "[t]hose who most distinguished themselves for excellent behavior" in action near the Middle Bridge at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as a deserter on 21 January 1863 and was captured and returned to his unit on 26 June 1865.

After the War

He was discharged in Louisville, KY as a Private at the end of his term on 16 September 1866.
