An 18 year old farmer in North Hadley, MA, he enlisted in Worcester as a Private in Company F, 21st Massachusetts Infantry on 19 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Satterlee US Army General Hospital in Philadelphia and was discharged from the 21st Massachusetts on 5 December 1862 to enlist there as a Private in Company M of the First United States Cavalry. He was listed as a deserter on 27 June 1863, with no later record.
