In 1860 he was an 18 year old store clerk in Farmington, CT. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company G, 16th Connecticut Infantry on 6 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability on 7 January 1863.
