Before the Antietam Campaign:
Likely from Mercer, Pennsylvania, he entered service as First Sergeant, Company G of the 10th Reserves on 19 June 1861. He was promoted to Ist Lieutenant on 10 May and Captain of the Company on 17 May 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He assumed command of the Regiment at Antietam on the 17th as senior officer present, in relief of Lieutenant Colonel Warner.

The remainder of the War:
He died 6 January 1863 of wounds received in action at Fredericksburg (Va) on 13 December 1862.
