Before Sharpsburg

From Butts County, he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 28 April 1862 at Griffin, GA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in his right cheek in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 28 September then on a 30 day furlough home beginning 3 October 1862. He was in Atlanta on 17 December 1862 but was back to duty by February 1863. He was admitted to the Floyd House and Ocmulgee Hospitals in Macon, GA on 23 November 1863 for a broken bone and was again on furlough to at least the end of the year. He was captured at Harper's Run, VA on 6 April 1865 and held at Point Lookout, MD until he took an oath of allegiance and was released on 28 June 1865.
