Age 25, from Rowan County, he enlisted as a Private in Company K of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 3 July 1861 in Salisbury.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Boonsboro, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware by about 22 September, paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October, and was in a Richmond, VA hospital by the 9th. He was listed as a deserter on 2 November and was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was wounded in the left elbow at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and was back on duty by September. He was killed at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 11 May 1864.
