Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, a farmer in Rowan County, he enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 3 (or 5) July 1861 in Rowan Mills.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a piece of shell to his head and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 27 September and probably sent south for exchange soon afterward. He was admitted to General Hospital #10 in Richmond, VA on 13 October and discharged there for disability due to "complete deafness caused by a shell wound to his head" on 29 October 1862.
