Before the Antietam Campaign:
He entered the service as Major, 111th Pennsylvania Infantry, on 23 December 1861. His Colonel and Lt Colonel both out sick, he led the Regiment at Cedar Mountain (9 August 1862).

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was still in command at Antietam, where he was wounded.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Lieutenenant-Colonel shortly after the battle (7 November), and was in command of the regiment at Gettysburg (July 1863). He was again wounded in action near Chatanooga, TN, in October 1863, but returned to lead the Regiment in November in the assault on Lookout Mountain. On 2 September 1864, he led the first Federal troops into Atlanta.

He was appointed Colonel of the 111th on 23 April 1865. Brevetted BGen 5 July 1865 for "meritorious service", he mustered out 19 July 1865.

After the War:
He was elected Erire County (PA) Sheriff in 1871.
