Age 44, he enlisted on 21 December 1861 in New York City, and mustered as a Private in Company F, 5th New York Heavy Artillery the same day.

On the Campaign

He was captured and paroled with the rest of the garrison at Harpers Ferry on 15 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was killed in action at Halltown near Harpers Ferry, VA on 26 August 1864.

After the War

He was reinterred in Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
