Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was commissioned Colonel, 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 28 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In action at Blacksford's Ford (Shepherdstown) on 19 September 1862 ... "Unsupported, and receiving a concentrated fire from front and flank, the command was subjected to a trying ordeal. Colonel Provost, while carrying the colors to the front, to check a momentary wavering of the line, was severely wounded and carried from the field".

The remainder of the War:
He was back with his Regiment at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863, but was then assigned to the Veterans Reserve Corps (VRC) camp at Harrisburg, PA. He resigned his commission as Colonel of the 118th in September 1863 and was appointed Colonel of the 16th VRC Regiment. He was in command of Camp Butler Military Prison 1864-65 and mustered out 30 June 1866. He was honored by brevet to Brigadier General on 15 March 1865.

After the War:
He was an insurance agent in Philadelphia and later Major General, Pennsylvania National Guard.
