In 1860 he was a 28 year old planter at Carthage in Tuscaloosa County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company H (later renamed D), 5th Alabama Infantry on 22 April 1861 at Tuscaloosa, AL.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware until paroled on 2 October, then sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged and eligible to return to duty on 10 November 1862. He transferred to Captain J.J. Pegues's Company, Alabama Cavalry (Company D, 2nd Alabama Cavalry) on 13 October 1862. He was with them to at least October 1863, the latest record in his military file.
