Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as a Private in Company I (later H, renamed D), 5th Alabama Infantry on 15 April 1861 at Greensboro, AL.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared officially exchanged and eligible to return to duty on 10 November 1862. He was wounded by a gunshot to his right tibia (thigh bone) on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA, and afterward in Richmond hospitals or on furlough. From 24 November 1863 to at least October 1864 he was detailed to the Conscript Bureau at Columbia, SC. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until released on 16 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
