Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as a Private in Company G (later renamed F), 5th Alabama Infantry on 10 March 1862 at Cahaba in Dallas County, AL.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 5 July 1863 and was in the Letterman and Seminary hospitals there as a nurse to 27 August 1863. He was in Baltimore to 9 September and sent to Point Lookout, MD on 15 September 1863. He was paroled and exchanged there on 18 February 1865.
