Appointed Captain of the 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry (90-day regiment) 18 April 1861 and honorably mustered out 31 July 1861. He was elected Lt Colonel of the 118th Pennsylvania 25 July 1862.
On the Campaign
LCol Gwyn was with the regiment which arrived at the Antietam on September 16th, but was in reserve and not engaged.
They had their first combat at Blackford's Ford on the 19th, in a sharp little engagement with the rear guard of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Gwyn assumed command late that day after Col Provost was wounded.
The rest of the War
He was made Colonel of the Regiment 5 December 1863 when Col Provost transferred to the Invalid Corps, vacating the Colonelcy, and was promoted to Brigade command in November 1864. He was honorably mustered out of the Army 1 June 1865.
