He was on wounded furlough from 17 November 1862 to 17 February 1863. He was wounded again, near Fredericksburg, VA on 3 May 1863, and killed at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863.

His widow Mary J. Gaffney filed for his final pay in May 1864.
