Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 22 year old farmer living with his parents and 8 siblings on their large farm at La Grange in Troup County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 13th Georgia Infantry on 8 July 1861 in Griffin, GA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on 17 April 1863 and promoted to (Senior) 2nd Lieutenant on 10 June 1863. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864, in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC to 17 June 1864, and then a prisoner at Fort Delaware until released 16 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance. He was then described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall with light complexion and dark hair and eyes.

After the War

By 1870 he was a farmer at La Grange, next door to his father.

He married Isabella Duffus McAndrew (1842-1927) in January 1861 and they had 10 children between 1861 and 1888.

His brother Jesse Wooten Owens (c. 1838-1914), also tall at 6' 1", was a Sergeant in Company K (1861-65).
