Before Antietam

He was a flour merchant in Cape Vincent, NY. He enlisted for 3 months' service as a Private in Company D, First Rhode Island Infantry on 2 May 1861 and mustered out with them on 2 August. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th United States Infantry on 24 October 1861 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 11 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company H at Antietam in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was at Frederickburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, then on recruiting duty. He died of disease at Fort Hamilton in May 1865 at 30 years of age.
