He was in Company A. He was age 26 years when he enlisted at New York City, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Company A, on 7 August 1861. Promoted to corporal, no date.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to Sergeant on 14 October 1862. Wounded again, on 13 December 1862 at Fredericksburg. Discharged for wounds on 1 May 1863.
