Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old gallant (?) living on his brother Marshall's farm at Rocky Point in Attala County, MS. He enrolled on 1 May 1861 at Rocky Point and was elected First Lieutenant of Company B, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion on 16 May. He was promoted to Captain on 18 June (to date from 7 March) 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 26 September and was on furlough to at least the end of 1862, but was back with his Company by February 1863. He was often absent, sick in 1863, and offered his resignation on 14 September 1863, but remained with his unit. He was killed at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864.

His widow applied for his final pay in August 1864.

He married Josephine Duhamel Styll (later Wilks, 1841-1915) in her hometown of Richmond, VA in November 1862 and they had a son Robert Miller McAfee (1864-1897).

His brothers Marshal and William were also in the Battalion during the war.
