He enlisted at Knoxville, MS as a Private in Company I, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion on 19 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent, in hospitals in Danville and Richmond, VA recovering, to at least May 1863, then detailed as a nurse in a Richmond, VA hospital through the rest of 1863. He was deemed unfit for field service due to wounds and detailed to guard duty at the Presidential Mansion in Richmond, VA in January 1864 and was there to the end of 1864. He "came in to be paroled" at Gainesville, FL in May 1865.
