Before Antietam

He enlisted as a Private in Company G, First Indiana Infantry on 14 June 1846 for Mexican War service and was discharged on 15 June 1847. By 1860 he was a farmer near Logansport, Cass County, IN.

He raised a Company of troops in Cass County at the start of the Civil War, for 3-months' service, and they became Company D, 9th Indiana Infantry on 25 April 1861; he mustered as their Captain. When they mustered out in July, he was appointed Captain in the 12th United States Infantry, to date from 14 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with the Battalion at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in action again at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station and Mine Run, VA, and was wounded in the Wilderness, VA about 7 May 1864. He was honored by brevets to Major (for the Wilderness and Richmond Campaign) and Lieutenant Colonel, USA (for war service).

After the War

He continued in Regular Army service and was transferred to the 30th US Infantry on 21 September 1866. In 1870 he was at Apache Pass near Tucson, AZ. He was promoted to Major of the 8th US Infantry on 19 February 1873, transferred back to the 12th Infantry on 4 May 1877, and retired on 29 June 1878.

By 1880 he was at Santa Monica, CA.

He married Harriet B. Tipton (1830-1887) in April 1859 and they had 6 children.
