Before Antietam

He was appointed First Lieutenant in the 12th United States Infantry to date from 14 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with the Battalion at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain on 10 August 1864. He was honored for his service in the Wilderness and battles for Richmond. by brevet to Captain in August 1864.

After the War

He continued in the Army and transferred to the 30th US Infantry on 21 September 1866. He was unassigned on 23 March 1869, then to the 25th US Infantry on 31 December 1870. He was promoted to Major, 20th US Infantry on 19 October 1886, to Lieutenant Colonel of the 24th Infantry on 14 October 1891, and to Colonel of the 18th Infantry on 23 May 1896. He retired on 20 June 1899.
