Before Antietam

He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd United States Infantry on 26 April 1861 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 30 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company E of the Third US Infantry at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was honored by brevet to Major for his actions at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and promoted to Captain on 20 October 1863.

After the War

He continued in the Army and was promoted to Major of the 9th US Infantry on 14 April 1884, to Lieutenant Colonel of the 20th Infantry on 15 May 1889, transferred to the 13th US Infantry on 10 December 1890, and appointed Colonel of the 18th United States Infantry on 26 November 1894. He retired on 23 May 1896. He was promoted on the retired list to Brigadier General, USA in 1904.
