A 29 year old printer, he enlisted in New York City as a Private in Company B, 2nd Battalion, 12th US Infantry on 12 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a Sergeant by 19 February 1863 when he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 6 June 1863 but resigned his commission on 8 (or 28) October 1863.
